    Update : Sony Ericsson Xperia Launched

    Lets hope the next 3 weeks are worth waiting for Sony Ericsson fans. Lots of information leek is going on at Sony’s place. First the leaked patent filed by Sony Ericsson’s over the term “Xperia” (short form of xperiance ?? Who know ?? ) on Jan 10th 2008 , then a press release. Even long time before symbian-freak got hands on the leaked picture of the speculated Sony Ericsson P5i. Here is the leaked SE’s press release ( if at all its true ) :

    Sony press release 2008

    Xperia , aka Sony’s Superphone , aka P5i , could be the major highlight of these press events. These press events are taking place in less than 3 weeks time, which does signifies that Sony is seriously planning for 2008. I do think they will be aiming to beat there score of selling 100 million phones in 2007 , which was 18% percent higher than 2006.

    Here is one of the concept picture of SE’s superphone, Xperia or P5i.

    sony xperia aka p5i

    I hope, the hype or the interest which Xperia is generating, SE is able to keep up the expectations. Launching another phone with touchscreen , symbian UIQ and again featureless walkman phone wont interest me.
    Quoting Stefan’s take on SE’s report of selling 100 million phones

    you’re better than this and you know it. You’re devices are slick, your dumb phone OS is gorgeous, yet UIQ is disgusting and consumers don’t feel like you’re hungry for that #1 spot that Nokia keeps on enjoying. Give us some standard ports (3.5 mm, USB) already and listen to your fans because on the internet I regularly hang out on, it isn’t Nokia vs Apple, it is Nokia vs Sony Ericsson.

    The quote do make sense, as, if you compare , where sony is trying to push forward their walkman phones by providing some unique shake technology , on the other hand nokia is working on providing latest technology making their phones more and more user friendly.

    Here is the trademark document retrieved which revealed Xperia

    I am a fan of Sony’s products… right form PSP, PS3 to its phones like K800i. none can beat their display quality.

    @smackall , our opinion differ in this case :) .. I hail all the way to nokia. In contrary , i always love to find bugs in the nokia phones and then make some noise in nokia discussion forums :D .. Sony is good .. but nokia’s are way ahead in terms of technology …

    Especially in terms of the screens, its hard to beat the high resolutions screen of the Nokia N90 that has been released a two years ago or so although current screens with QVGA resolution sucks a lot, the N95 8Gb is nice example, Nokia has managed to stretch the QVGA resolution over its limits. Actually there are numerous cheap Chinese phones with great WVGA touch screens and I just can’t realize what the major brands waiting for :/

    @apoc , great to see you here buddy. As far as I know, it seems making these high resolution display adds too much of cost as mentioned when nokia n80 was out. Yeah I have heard a lot about chinese phone and seen thousand clones here at china market, but still its not the display which matters. Chinese phone are good in features but if you see the life, they are good for just 3 to 4 months. They hang a lot and sometimes will drive you nuts.

    @Kanak
    I accept you words 100%. Nokia are always ahead. But for a developer, Sony shows more care and gives a bugless (or less buggy) platform. And Sony devices have good powerful CPU and memory when compared to others.
    I know I am speaking from a developer point of view. And Nokia has every spec optimized heavily and alway tries to keep the spec as minimum as possible. :)

    from User point of view, my personal phone is N70. I also have a K800i at office… :)

    Well Kanak, you cannot say that Nokia is far ahead in technology than SE. If you are a Nokia fan (I’m telling general statement), then you are bound to give a low rating for SE phones in review. This is clear from Stefan’s quote or you can check phonearena’s reviewer comment= “We are not a fan of SE phones”. Then why the hell are they reviewing them and giving lesser rating?
    To be fair, both phones are good in their own features, one cannot say SE is behind Nokia in terms of technology.
    SE need not push fowared their walkman phones, they are really hot and this could be easily understood when Nokia launched the music edition of N-Series and few X-press music phones.

    @smackall , hey i was having the thought that coding for nokia symbian phones must be much easier , thats y we have tons and tons of application for nokia symbian phones. Sony’s CPU, I am not sure coz its said that ARM processor is the one for phones and > 300 mhz is the fastest available ??? Correct me if I wrong :)

    @nirmal,
    I agree with you , nokia phone fan will always give less credit to sony and vice versa. From the point of reviewer , I wonder being a fan of one brand, would give the reviewer a right to be biased on a review. The latter comes coz of the comparision with the feature availability. Imagine , I review a sony-walkman phone and nokia music edition phone. Nokia provides a dedicated audio chip , 3.5mm connector , 2gb included card etc. Sony do provide a card but just 512 mb , but other options are lacking. So the comparison has to be there, otherwise we wont know what the kind of feature is available in other brand. Same like Nokia camera’s was considered old fashioned when they lacked Xenon flask like SE :) .

    @Kanak
    Let me explain…

    Most Nokia devices have exactly around the same (or little more than) CPU spec and memory capacity that the Symbian gives in their minimum requirements. And only their native C++ code is little bug free. JVM (java Virtual machine) implementation is really buggy in every version and has atleast 10 major bugs. The JVM is much slower compared to Sony. For example, Sony device can read an image from within the application in around 10 times less duration than Nokia. So we usually cannot load images dynamically during the game in Nokia which is very well possible in Sony. Top FPS for a tiled game that can be achieved with Nokia and Sony resply is (12~15) and (28~32). This is due to the jvm implementation…

    Now let me compare the difficulty of writing games for each manufacturer.

    1) Sony Erricsson (Best - Developers feel happy to work for Sony)
    2) Nokia (Good Enough - Developers feel little painful when it comes to tile based or FPS based games)
    3) Motorola, Samsung (******** - Our development team will start crying if I say “we have to port this game to Motorola and Samsung”)

    This link lists the phones according to CPU speed. Just see where Nokia starts at…

    This is the list for 2D medium quality performance…

    These 2 links are for K800i and N70-1

    Check these sections
    1) Free heap at startup
    2) Java virtual processor speed (Funny, just check minimum)

    I agree with your story on 3.5mm jack, but still dont know why the hell there is so much discussion on it. I feel you can always connect the 3.5mm jack with the walkman connector.
    Now coming to 2GB and 512MB cards, SE phones are cheaper, so if give extra money, then you can always get the extra memory. BTW providing 2GB card does not make Nokia technologically advanced. If you compare feature by feature, I can also give you features which are not available in Nokia, but available in Sony.

    @smackall ,
    Thanks for the great info buddy. I always used to see these Jbenchmark test in mobile-review , but never actually understood how they actually carry it out and whats the use. With your info , i think I was missing a developer point of view at these tests . You rock :D

    @nirmal ,
    Nirmal , its not about 3.5mm jack. Alternatives are there. Even any nokia phone can be connected to headphone with 3.5mm adapter. But just coz an alternative is available doesnt mean that there is no need to implement it in mobile phone. Just like why to have a music player in phone when you have a dedicated mp3 player available in market, or y to have gps when you can connect a dedicated gps device via bluetooth.
    Mentioning 2gb card , 3.5mm connector was just an example I was trying to give from a reviewer’s point of view. Nothing to do with technology.
    Its just that, till now the concept of “All in one” or a “perfect phone” doesnt exist. :)

    wow….two SE fans taking on one nokia fan here…I will join Kanak to render some balance here…

    nokia and C++ code jell well…don’t they? let me add here that Nokia traditionally have some great C++ coders in their labs and it is little wonder that they come out with bugless C++ code…

    Java to me is always slow and the kind of control that you get with C++ is not possible with Java…may be this is one reason that they find it difficult to maintain the same goodness in their Java code…

    @rajesh
    Thanks for taking my side ;) . As per me , I am still to know the technicality of this C++ and java. Might be coz i am not programming for software development ( I am in ABAP/4 .. SAP :D ) . I wish I could add some info with my personal experience. I remember playing prince of persia on my nokia handset , I think it was a c++ game and it worked really well . :)

    @smackall , forgot to add , Its not only developers, many nokia phone users also cry while using motorola and samsung. The complexity of menu , and search to switch on or off a particular setting, take ages for them to understand :lol:
