You read it right , there is a Nokia S60 touch device lined up in a “Tube”. Finally nokia has identified its primary rival, an Iphone. We all knew it , dont we ??
It all started long time back when we got an announcement from nokia, stating that it is not interested in touchscreen phones as the kind of feedback a keypad can provide, you can never get with a touch phone. This statement was quickly taken off and nokia corrected itself saying that they are indeed interested in Touch phones. And this was the actual kickoff of Iphone effect over a huge mobile giant. Sony xperia , and Samsung haptic touch mobile are live examples. Sony has kept Xperia pretty mysterious, and Samsung haptic touch phone is still not available, Nokia’s small announcement made everyone aware that its also in the race.
Iphone outsold every smartphone and marked a new direction of thought for all the mobile manufacturers. All the mobile giants, instead of working on planned series, shifted full attention to create an Iphone Killer. After all what better way to get a hype by utilizing the name of highly popular gadget among the masses. Many companies were able to achieve the sensor powered auto rotation UI, but again overall they were not even close to the kind of experience an Iphone provided to its users.

Who is gonna be the winner ??
Nokia leads in technology and Iphone leads in innovation. High end nokia phone is no short of an Iphone, just that it lacks an innovative touch. With S60’s promise to provide that to Nokia, I am sure Nokia is going to be a winner. Nokia’s marketing strategy is no less than Apple’s, and Nokia phones do make a buzz around. Also it seems this phone supports Java based applications, which Iphone can only dream of.
Whats there in a tube ???
I was really surprised hearing the codename “Tube” which nokia has given to the first S60 touch powered phone. As far as I feel, nokia is trying to indicate that the new device is going to focus on video playing technique. I see codename “tube” to be inspired with “youtube” which is now the most visited video site. So I am sure the phone is gonna be equipped with a :-
- High resolution screen
- Excellent video playback
- Excellent Video Recording option
- Direct video upload to Youtube
And ofcourse other common addons like Wifi , 3g , 3.5g , bluetooth , huge memory etc etc.
But the curiosity ( as no official date is announced ) which is building now is whether Nokia will be able to keep up to its words ?? With the expectations going pretty high , I hope Nokia wont disappoint its fans.
Finally Quoting few lines from electronista,
Neither additional features nor a release date have been discussed, though Nokia has demonstrated the Tube playing Shrek the Third and last year showcased a likely related concept that includes iPhone-like photo navigation and an accelerometer that auto-rotates the image depending on the phone’s relative position to the user.
At the conference, Forum Nokia VP Tom Libretto directly compared the Tube to the iPhone and explained that both features as well as sheer market influence would help Nokia outmuscle Apple. The latter has shipped 4 million iPhones as of January but is dwarfed by Nokia’s sales, which saw 133.4 million phones shipped just in the holiday quarter alone. Apple is simply unable to match that production scale, according to the executive.
“We’ve done that [iPhone level of volume] since we’ve had dinner on Friday,” Libretto says.
So lets wait for some leaked pictures in upcoming weeks. Watch the long back released S60 touch video here.
