Update: Please note the option doesnt work for videos which are removed due to Copyright issues.
I am sure not many of you must have encountered this problem, but the below screenshots will actually convey the problem which I was facing for so long.
With the first screenshot you must have been clear that, some videos, even when there is no copy-right issue with them, appear as “Not available”. Second screenshot, I tried to change the url of youtube video from
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgEo_7rMH0Q to
http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/PgEo_7rMH0Q which inturn is a way to access blocked youtube videos(videos, which need you to be above 18) here in UAE , but that also didnt work. So any guesses what solved the problem ????
Solutions to this problem

There are two solutions for this problem :
- Hotspotshield : This is a free vpn service, which connects to US network. Hence you get assigned a US ip address and hence, you can watch youtube video without any problem. This clearly state that this problem is only for a particular region. Download hotspot shield from here.

Youtube High Quality video option to the rescue :If you want to save yourself with the hassle of switching on hotspot shield, then here a better option. Append &fmt=6 or &fmt=18 or &fmt=16to the end of the url and watch the video getting played. For example the above url will become :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgEo_7rMH0Q&fmt=6 or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgEo_7rMH0Q&fmt=18 or
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgEo_7rMH0Q&fmt=16 - Only for UAE ( Etisalat Proxy ) : This option will work for Etisalat Internet Connection. If you are using IE then go to Menu >> Tools >> Internet options >> Connections >> Lan Settings >> and check the option use proxy. In proxy text box enter 213.42.1.19 and port enter 8080. Click ok in all the dialog boxes and now your youtube videos will start working.

I think its just a glitch. I have gotten that message and it goes away after I refresh the browser. But maybe it works because I’m in Canada? So perhaps it is only in Non-Canadian/American places?….hmmm a mystery lol

This is an interesting problem I have since some weeks. Although living in Germany!!! But I’ve got an American subbook and think it could come from that. (My boyfriend says nevertheless I cannot have an American IP adress…!?)
But I’m very happy not to have it fixed with the &fmt=6 or &fmt=18 or &fmt=16 method. Is it possible that not every one works with every video???

hehehe … actually that was not the reason. Normally, I face this problem on mostly all the videos posted on Johnchow.com (my comment on this post http://www.johnchow.com/the-adtech-show-floor/ ).. while writing this post, I searched for johnchow and this video appear on 4th or 5th position ..and it was not working ..thats how ..
However we should keep looking at options… If there is some way to make money online .. I always like to check it out ..

yeah, i tried utube on aol.com and it never works. but when i switch to firefox it work. so try only watching youtube on firefox

I encounter this problem a lot. I tried your “&fmt=6 or &fmt=18″ tip and it says “The URL contained a malformed video ID.”
I’m not sure about the VPN. I can’t trust the other ip’s. I’m still working on getting a vpn that will give me good speed and access to everything i need.
This problem is very annoying. 6 out of 10 videos give me that error.
For me its working perfectly… I have a doubt that while adding &fmt=6 or &fmt=18 , you are by mistake replacing some characters in in video id. please check once again… Since I am at UAE, I also encounter this problem now in 90% of videos , but it always start playing when i append &fmt=18 or &fmt=6 …
hi, I was having this problem for sometime and &fmt=18 worked for me. thanks a ton! I am not sure whether it is region specific because am in the US. When I connect through my office network, it works but when i connect from home, it doesn’t. I know the only thing that changes is the IP. may be the internet speed in our house network is faster than the office lan, youtube detects it and allows me to play videos only in high quality?? I know it doesn’t make sense but can’t think of any thing else!
another observation – this &fmt=18 works for me in IE but not in Firefox. I am happy as long as it works in one of the browsers!6

Yeah, I have the same problem in Dubai, started happening recently, but Hotspot Shield has also recently stopped working… Maybe they did something to stop you from getting around their blocks, cause its on and off but hasnt worked for a while now

hey, I tried the proxy thing and it didn’t seem to work, and my internet stopped working, and I tried the #2 one and it only worked for one and a half videos and then not anymore, could it be because I’m in Australia? if so, what should I do differently?

The Hotspot Shield (www.hotspotshield.com) solution worked for me because my local ISP screwed up their transparent proxy. Thanks for the info!

I have tried absolutely everything but nothing ever works.
I don’t have that google accelerator and I have the latest flash version And there’s nothing wrong with my proxy server, I checked everything but all was ok, and youtube still gives me video errors.
and even before I get these errors I couldn’t watch HighQuality or HighDefinition videos properly.
And finally I discovered my fix for both problems (videos not available on regular quality, and videos not available on higher qualities)
It was the Internet Download Manager installed on my PC, I needed that program cause it rocks, so I found out a way to both solve the problem and keep the program, by opening IDM’s Options from the downloads tab, and going to FileTypes tab, and under “Don’t start downloading automatically from the following sites” I typed *.*.googlevideo.com, then hit OK.
And then everything worked like a piece of cake!
