…Also comes with autorotation feature.
Recently Nokia released another update for Nokia N95 8GB edition phone. This update is released really fast, as previous update was just nearly 3 months back. To make a symbian phone bug free is a hefty task for Nokia but again that doesnt stop the kick ass success of nokia phones ( You must have seen the Nokia Q1, 2008 results, didnt you ?? ) .
Previous firmware update brought lots of issues to Nokia n95 8gb. The main problem it created were
- N95 8gb Spiderman edition, Access key removal (irreversible). Blame game at nokia discussion
- Video recording Stuttering problem (Video recording will halt for 1 or 2 second in every 5 to 10 secs of recording). Read full discussion about this here , here and here
- Saving the video or image after capture became slow. Discussion here
- Bugs in browser
Since these bugs affected a whole lot of people, the next firmware update was expected pretty soon and here it is. I wonder whether many will be interested in this update as its nearly 100mb in size (screenshot below). I updated my phone and have noticed the following changes (official change log will be out within next few days) :
- Autorotation of screen based on Accelerometer
- Browsing seems to be more stable while going through Youtube
- Video stuttering problem is solved.
- Video gets saved within 3 to 10 seconds after you finish shooting (It depends on length of the video), hence memory access problems seems to be solved.
- Image processing seems to be improved in Auto Mode
- Overall phone accessing speed improvement.

Nokia N95 8gb phone is a beauty with full capabilities of a Multimedia Computer. Without any arguments, its one of the best mobile phone I have used till now. There is so much under this small device. No wonder, Nokia N95 has nearly sold 10 million units till now ( no official announcement yet ), in less than a year. I hope Nokia Tube 5800 also keep up the expectations.

Welcome slayer
thanks for the info. i’ll never use anoher phone again other than nseries range.
Hi,
Have you found any bugs so far?
I’m planning to upgrade the firmware soon.
Please reply.
Nokia is getting closer to multimedia computers
@deepak
No i have not found any bugs. not sure whether this is a bug. When you try to call and there is a network busy tone, the phone hangs for a couple of seconds. Another thing, it gives certificate expired error for some softwares, but that you can handle by just changing the date to one year back and installing the software. not sure about the rest 1% , but i have found it 99%bug free. I will keep you informed
Hi
Will this firmware update remove the spiderman 3 activation key that the previous firmware revision did ?
yes it will … hence you take the backup of your phone memory before updating …

is there a way to backup current applications installed on the phone and restore them after firmware upgrade or will i have to re-install all application and do all the customization all over again ?
you would have to reinstall .. only option is to install applications on the memory card … and if possible take backup of your memory card .. however it doesn’t prevent corruption of certain applications
Thanks Kanak, I already found out the hard way. i had to take it to the service so i won’t lose the warranty and got it back with all the files on the memory card but the OS won’t run them and i had few “left overs” in the app. manager, some of them refused to be removed so i had to re-install them on top of the old ones. lucky for me i save all the install files so my phone came back to itself in no-time.
now i gotta find me a good fax application (not a service) and I’m set. wish me luck.
Hi there, I have just updated my N95 8GB with 2.0.016 but it’s still having quite major problems, memory addressing the mass storage is very slow, video still jumpy, music player takes minuets to open files….. etc etc. was thinking of re-formatting mass memory, anyone tried this? could try re installing the update? ideas? Thanks
@toby
As for me ..all the major problems got solved with firmware upgrade. The phone is fast and video saving takes maximum of 5 sec for 15-20 minute video recorded at 30fps at VGA. May be you should format the mass memory..I think that should solve the issues … Sometimes if you install loads of untrusted programs ..it is likely to corrupt memory and hence formatting is the only solution.
Good Luck
it may sound crazy, but if you think the problem is in the mass memory, why not plug your phone to the PC and run defrag?
personally i prefer “Diskeeper” because i believe MS defrag doesn’t do the job, but i don’t think you have anything to lose. (make a backup first. just in case)
also, apps that run from the mass memory run slower because of access times. if you have one of those run in the background then the whole device will be affected. i have a personal rule, to install all the applications i can on phone memory and leave the mass memory for data (pics, videos, music etc.)
just my 0.02$

@firelogic,
I beg to differ here, The programs should be installed in mass memory. Accessing time doesnt matter coz the phone is capable of reading the memory at that pace.
Its always advisable to keep the phone memory empty so that the overall performance of phone is at pace. Normally, many programs use phone memory for temporary storage and hence if your phone memory is already low, it will result the phone to hang and stutter more.
Consider it like your OS. If your C drive( in which OS is installed) goes low on memory , your overall desktop system becomes slow coz of low memory. Hence better option is to keep the phone memory free so that the phone perform at optimal speed.
Cheers !!
Hi there Kanak, well the re format seems to have worked, Thanks.the phone may have been struggling with a file structure set out by the old firmware, it did have about 6Gb of music on it, no applications though. just incredibly slow at accessing the mass storage. video seems to work now, and the music player found the 1 song quickly! I guess time will tell!
great Toby,
Things will be fine now … N95 firmware comes with loads of bug fixes… and overall speed will be great…
Have fun with N95.. its indeed a great phone.
I have to take mine to the service provider whenever i want to upgrade the firmware in order to maintain my warranty. say, is there a way to take some sort or snapshot or image the phone memory so i can put it all back after the upgrade without reinstalling everything. (maybe i asked this question once but i don’t remember the answer? they don’t make memory for my brain anymore. old model).

yeah firelogic , I think you can take a backup using Nokia PC suite and then restore the same …
I don’t think Nokia PC suite is very reliable in that matter. i tried it several times and it crashed on me.
Do we know of any utility that i can use to externally (from my PC) see the phone memory (not just card) and take a full snapshot of all the files there?
