There is a rumor that there will be the iPhone with the GPS-receiver announced in spring 2008. Reportedly, it will be likely built on SiRF Star III chip. Apple plans to apply Assisted GPS (A-GPS) technology, the source says. It stands out for minimum location time and the capability to work in environment with lots of objects disturbing the signal, for example, buildings and trees.

GPS has been one of the most selling technology for this year. Latest Nokia N95 and E90, E65 etc are already installed with GPS chip.
Iphone as we all know combines three amazing products — a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching — into one small and lightweight handheld device. iPhone also introduces an entirely new user interface based on a large multi-touch display and pioneering new software, letting you control everything with just your fingers. So it ushers in an era of software power and sophistication never before seen in a mobile device, completely redefining what you can do on a mobile phone. Only this missing was a GPS navigation and as the rumors are floating in , its not that far from iphone.
Accroding to Appletechnews
Because of the high expectations placed upon the iPhone, Apple is certain to use a chipset using Assisted GPS technology, which cuts down the time needed to determine a location using GPS. (A-GPS) is necessary in urban areas with tall buildings or locations with heavy tree cover.
Moving a bit technical side :
The next iPhone probably due out at Macworld or early spring of ‘08 will incorporate a GPS receiver chip closely matching the SiRFstarIII from SiRF Technology. Even though the StarIII’s power consumption is a bit higher than Apple would like it is considered the best chip for a mobile device of this kind, having the capability to receive signals from 20 different satellites simultaneously and a super fast First Fix Time.

After all the hype apple created while the official annoucement of Iphone has now gone down because of so many clones produced and released in market with similar UI. Delay in launch and release of latest gadget by other mobile vendors like Nokia , Sony etc has also played a major role in defaming Apple’s innovation.
