QWERTY keypad is nothing new, but there’s always a room for innovation and HTC is trying to prove it. They have filed a patent of a new type of qwerty slider which when closed will serve as a numeric keypad. The following images will prove what its gonna look like.

Even though the patented design looks really innovative (slide out for normal qwerty keypad and close it just for numeric keypad) but I dont think HTC need to go for that. Touchscreen phones with a qwerty keypad make them really bulky, fat and hard to handle. Also many times, lack of proper casing make the keypad loose trying to get rid of the phone. Hence, try increasing screen size or add up some more resolution.

May be, HTC need to work on making touchscreen phones more responsive. Other day while trying my friend’s HTC touch, I found it so difficult to get a response from the phone as I was using my finger. Finally, my friend enlightened me that I need to use finger nail to get a proper response . But still I failed to experience the highly innovative rotating UI of the phone.

Hope you guys know that HTC has lot of stuff into Sony’s Xperia. No wonder it also come with an impressive arc slider.

You guys have got stuff so why not extend in more responsive touchscreen phones. Finally have a look at the highly confusing patent design.

My head is going round after having a look at the patent. I think they really need to do something with the keypad, hope its not difficult to type. :P

I have the same feeling. Personally, I dont like touchscreen with keypad as it makes them bulky and keypad is very difficult to handle with fat fingers

From the sketch, it looks as if the user needs to make two movements to close the slider.

I hope i’m wrong, but if that turn out to be true, there is no great innovation here.

No no, The movement is just one. The number keypad doesnt hide and the shape turns into a candy bar mobile phone. The concept seems to be, why to use a full keyboard when you want to type only number or while using a calculator.

the innovation here is regarding the form factor the phone provides.
