After the 25th anniversary of Emoticons , its time to put our hands together once again to wish one more ground breaking technology its 15th birthday. The technology is no other than SMS ( Short Message Service ) which is now an inseparable part of our mobile life.

    If you refer wikipedia :

The first commercial SMS message was sent over the Vodafone GSM network in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1992, from Neil Papworth of Airwide Solutions (using a personal computer) to Richard Jarvis of Vodafone (using an Orbitel 901 handset). The text of the message was “Merry Christmas”. The first SMS typed on a GSM phone is claimed to have been sent by Riku Pihkonen, an engineer student at Nokia, in 1993.

It’s been 15 years and the SMS phenomenon that started off with a maximum capacity of 10 messages per second, has increased to over 16,000 message per second per SMSC application - and earns virtually every mobile operator a significant chunk of change each year.

Amazing how SMS is still so popular. MMS failed miserably, but SMS still lives :)
