Yes, usb are both upward and backward, meaning a 2.0 will work on a 1.0, thats when window tells you the usb device can perform faster if it is plugged into a 2.0 socket. so a 2.0 will work on a 3.0 like a 1.0 will work on a 2.0

Right click in task tray and end all or any programs running in back ground and see if this helps. If you have an icon in task tray for external hard drive right click on and choose exit and remove.

Certain programs work on an external hard and certain things don't. If you have office part of it on one drive and one on the external hard drive then it will give you problems. If you install sims on it then it will work.

Check the website for your hard drive to see if there's an upgrade to its firmware to make it compatible with newer OSs. Also check the compatibility site of your OS to see if the drive appears.

No other manufacturer comes close, they have been in the Hard Drive business for decades and are cool running, very-very reliable, well made & tough as old boots! You can't get better than Western Digital in my books they are No1 for reliability and many other aspects as well!
