There is hardly any computing device today that lacks a USB port. The use of this hardware has permeated the computing world so much that even cell phones have it. So why has computer manufacturers failed to make external hared drives that have them? Well, I do not have to ask so much. A Japanese company called Freecom which is actually a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Company has already doe it and is sure to rake in a lot consumers with the product. Freecom is already noted for innovative external disk and this product comes as no surprise in terms of innovation but sets the industry amazed with USB 3.0. With this capability, users can have transfer rates of up to 130 MBs which makes it a truly 3G products.

The new drive increases the data storage opportunities of users. With this innovative product, more sensitive data can carried around for critical assignments both in the office and in the field. Data Centers will also have a quick, reliable way to back up their data.

Freecom has even been able to think ahead. In some few years to come, the standard will be USB 3.0 so it has taken the lead to capture the market as far as portable storage devices is concerned before teethes do. Again, the vast amount of storage space means users can download entire television programs; a feature that will also help gamers transfer large files onto their PCs or consoles in seconds. For people with standard USB 2.0, Freecom intends to offer a controller that will convert their systems so they can have the speed that the 3.0 version comes with.

The Belgian Sylvain Willenz contributed in the development of the product. It is remarkable that Freecom included this noted engineer for he has a high reputation within the technology fraternity as an innovator. The company has announced that the new USB enabled hard disk will be available in November in 1.5TB and 2TB versions.

Update : While writing this , I noticed , Buffalo is planning to ship USB 3.0 external HDD this month.

No other manufacturer comes close, they have been in the Hard Drive business for decades and are cool running, very-very reliable, well made & tough as old boots! You can’t get better than Western Digital in my books they are No1 for reliability and many other aspects as well!

Check the website for your hard drive to see if there’s an upgrade to its firmware to make it compatible with newer OSs. Also check the compatibility site of your OS to see if the drive appears.

Certain programs work on an external hard and certain things don’t. If you have office part of it on one drive and one on the external hard drive then it will give you problems. If you install sims on it then it will work.

Right click in task tray and end all or any programs running in back ground and see if this helps. If you have an icon in task tray for external hard drive right click on and choose exit and remove.

Yes, usb are both upward and backward, meaning a 2.0 will work on a 1.0, thats when window tells you the usb device can perform faster if it is plugged into a 2.0 socket. so a 2.0 will work on a 3.0 like a 1.0 will work on a 2.0
