  • So here is a chance for you to catch your ISP red handed.

If you ever wanted evidence to prove that , your ISP interfering with your BitTorrent connections, Cutting off your VOIP calls, Undermining the principles of network neutrality , then Electronic Frontier Foundation has developed the right network testing tool for you called Switzerland.

As stated, Switzerland is an open source software tool for testing the integrity of data communications over networks, ISPs and firewalls. It will spot IP packets which are forged or modified between clients, inform you, and give you copies of the modified packets.

However , this tool is still in alpha stage of development, so , if things dont work out, EFF have excuses.

    Here is more about Switzerland

The software uses a semi-P2P, server-and-many-clients architecture. Whenever the clients send packets to each other, the server will attempt to determine if any of them were dropped, forged, or modified. Switzerland is a much more sophisticated successor to the pcapdiff software that we released last year. It automates many of the things that had to be done by hand with the earlier code.

One advantage this architecture has over other network testing tools is that it can spot arbitrary kinds of packet modifications in any protocol — it doesn’t assume that the interference comes in the form of TCP reset packets or web page modifications, and it isn’t limited to BitTorrent or any other specific application.

Internet Censorship !! Is that legal ??

This tool is really a good option for people who were always double minded that Internet censorship is actually taking place at the ISP level. However, I wonder these proofs can be taken to court and fought for ??

Here in UAE, internet is highly censored, with mostly all the VOIP sites , orkut , (porno) , bittorrent etc sites blocked directly at the ISP level. However, there are loads of unblocking options, but still censorship of legit sites do leave you frustrated.

VOIP options and sites are blocked in UAE for the sole reason that it will highly effect the billion $ profit which the two telecom companies ( Etisalat and DU ) are making over International Calls. However, I hope things change in near future.

But whatever it is , I feel internet Censorship is highly illegal and strict laws should be made to safeguard the customer’s interest.

So, if you were looking for proofs to prove that your ISP is interfering or modifying the data, you have got a tool now. Moreover, if you country provide strict laws on internet cencorship ( which is highly unlikely though ) may be you can use these against your ISP.

I need to reach home to try out the kind of details this software provides.

However, are you also paying for censored internet like we do in UAE ???

Well , here at UAE .. i think DU is still allowing lots of site which Etisalat has blocked. But as you said , internet censorship should be made illegal, but then cultural identity of UAE will be lost.

well said rajesh, talking about cultural identity .. i feel it should be guided by inner sense not via censorship
