After Nokia N8 was available for preorder in UAE, I had plans of posting a detailed review with videos and pictures. Days after that,  Micky over Nokiausers did an extensive Video roundup of Nokia N8 and Clinton Jeff from zomgitscj posted a handson report of his first encounter with Nokia N8. Do have a look at these articles.

Coming back to the topic, lets try to find out why you should buy a Nokia N8. Shall we ? .. But wait… first have a look at the Nokia N8 official video, and then the reasons after the jump..

1. Symbian^3

Yeah, Nokia N8 is first Symbian^3 device and a step ahead of Symbian 5th Edition or S60V5 or the OS which run Nokia’s touchscreens currently available in market. To be frank, I was not such a big fan of S60v5 after owning a Nokia 5800, but things got little better with Nokia N97. Symbian^3 comes with around 250 new features according to Nokia.

2. 12 Megapixel camera with Xenon Flash

We all are aware of the outstanding camera phones made by Nokia. Nokia N8 takes it not one but many steps higher. Check out the untouched image samples taken from Nokia N8. If you want more details you can check out all the FAQs  and part1 of Nokia N8 camera.

3. HD video recording

Nokia N8 allows you to shoot HD videos with amazing clarity. Nokia N8 is also being used to shoot videos for Israeli "American Idol" ( Videos can be found at Mynokiablog ). 4. Video and Photo Editor

Nokia N8 comes with inbuilt video and photo editor. You can edit your videos and photos on the go, add effects and also upload them to various video sharing websites. Check it out in the video below.

5. FM transmitter

Just like Nokia N97, Nokia N8 comes with an inbuilt FM transmitter, which allow you to play audio files on your phone, via your car’s speaker without the need of any wires. Check out this cool feature in the video below demonstrating FM transmitter on Nokia N97.

6. Multiple home screens

Nokia N8 comes with 3 homescreens which are highly customizable with live widgets connected to the internet. Each screen can be customized with upto 6 widgets like shortcuts, email, twitter and facebook notificatons etc. Also, each homescreen can have a separate wallpaper. Multiple homescreen was one feature which I always missed in my Nokia N97.

7. Free Voice Guided Navigation

Ovi maps with Free turn by turn voice guided navigation is one among the many features of Nokia N8. Never get lost anywhere around the world with Nokia Ovi maps. Tripadvisor and bookatable.com  are now integrated into Ovi maps. Ovi maps can be downloaded to your device via a desktop computer and can be used offline for navigation, unlike Google Maps and hence you save data charges from your mobile carrier.

8. TV connectivity via HDMI with Dolby digital 5.1 channel Surround sound

With Nokia N8 you have got a home theatre right in your pocket. Nokia N8 can project videos at 720p along with 5.1 channel surround sound via HDMI cable to a compatible HD television set.

9. USB on the go

A very geeky solution you never knew unless you heard about Nokia N8. Now with small adapter provided by  Nokia, you will be able to connect a USB Pen drive, a Mobile phone , Portable Hard disks etc and transfer or play audio and video directly from the device. Thats right, no more need to connect to a computer to transfer media.

10. Amoled Display with nHD resolution

Nokia N8 comes with amoled display which is the best in any Nokia ever.  The screen is bright and very much readable under the sun and consumes less power. With nHD (640X360) resolution the video and photo viewing on phone is such a pleasure.

11. Capacitive touchscreen with Multitouch

After Nokia X6, Nokia N8 sports a capacitive touch screen. Capacitive touch screens are made up of glass are very sensitive unlike resistive screens and provide the usage of multitouch technology. Nokia N8 supports multitouch, so now you have the gimmicky pinch to zoom capability in Web browser, Ovi maps , emails , photos etc.  

12. Hardened Gorilla glass

Since Nokia N8 sports a glass touch screen, the durability becomes a big issue. To address this, Nokia N8 comes with Hardened Gorilla glass which is the hardest glass available in the market till date and hence prevent your glass screen from getting scratched. Nokia N8 comes integrated with all the Social Networking tools. The best thing is that these will be built in your phonebook and you will be able to get instant updates on your live home screen. So now you can be in touch with your friends and family with just one click.

Nokia N8 comes with highly improved Nokia Messaging client with MSExchange and push email support. I think this is the first email client which provide you an option to search the server address book. The client support Full HTML and also multitouch capabilities. 15. New Ovi Store

Nokia N8 will launch with a completely redesigned Ovi Store. The whole look and feel of the Ovi Store is changed and searching and installing application is going to be super fast. You can view more details about the Ovi Store at all about Symbian.

16. Web TV

Nokia N8 is also a portable TV in your pocket. You can watch live streaming (around 30 fps) of many popular channels. Channels like CNN , IBN live etc will come bundled with Nokia N8 along with many local channels. More channels support will be provided in future.

17. Availability in different Colors with full aluminum casing

Are you really tried of those regular phone colors and want something different. Nokia heard you and have provided 5 different colors for Nokia N8. You can now choose among Orange , Blue , Black , Grey and Green color for your phone (personally , my favorite is Blue ). Also the colors are built into the anodized aluminum casing which means that if try to scratch your phone, you can just wipe it off without any evident scratches and loss in color.It even survived a 3 meter drop from a balcony. 18. Completely reworked Music Player with Cover Flow

Nokia N8 comes with a completely reworked music player. Albums are now present in a cover flow which scrolls super smooth ( at 60 fps) , and let you find the song you are looking for very easily. Check out the first 1 minute of the video.

19. DIVX Video support

Nokia N8 supports DivX codec out of the box. That means you no more need to install any DivX player or Smartmovie to play an avi or any divx file. 20. World phone with Bluetooth 3.0 and Wifi n support

Nokia N8 is a penta band world phone, which means that it will work anywhere in the world. It also comes with latest connectivity options like Bluetooth 3.0 which provide super fast transfer of files via bluetooth and wifi n support for super fast wifi speed.

We all know, Nokia never marketed their N series line up for something less than mobile computers. But again as the mobile manufacturing market saturates, there was a need from Nokia to shift its focus to something more than just mobiles. Loads and loads of services, i.e. Ovi store, Ovi Share , Nokia Music , Nokia maps etc indeed hint the transition. We all know that a mobile phone can never actually replace a laptop , no matter how much you market it as a mobile computer. Nokia’s mobile phone share in the market keeps swinging between 35 to 40 percent and overall Smartphone share is somewhere static around 40%. This does not mean that the company is not growing, but it did indicate that the time is right to set up the focus on various other untouched areas, and Nokia Booklet has actually evolved from that.

Nokia has undergone a very smooth transition from a Mobile manufacturing company to a mobile Services company and now to mobile netbook manufacturing company. Mobile market is very dynamic , and I don’t think its an easy task for Nokia now to actually manufacture devices , which can all of a sudden boost its overall share in the market.

Nokia booklet is amazingly beautiful netbook, its really got looks and style and will surely rock the netbook segment with true mobility. Nokia’s marketing team is the best compared to any other company in the world, and with every successful viral campaign, they end up creating such a great hype about the device. The only thing I await for is the price. Netbook segment is not at all over priced , and I hope Nokia is able to maintain the same resistance.

With the Booklet 3G Nokia is also looking at delivering a superior Ovi experience out of the box, complete with a Ovi Maps widget that pin points your location within seconds and the other Ovi services such as Files, Music and Sync.

So as per the above statistics ( which is based on clickthrough rates from 32 million ad impressions across its network of more than 50,000 sites in a week in July),  only 0.97% Google referrals click on ads, for Yahoo its 1.24% and Bing its nearly 1.5%.

Why people click ads : A criteria for search engine ranking?

Its always said, people visiting your blog or website via a search engine referral are more likely to click ads. People search a particular information on these search engines, and finally based on the keywords entered while search, they are provided with results on Google , Yahoo or  Bing (depending on the search engine you are using) .Now, after you get the search results, 95% of people just visit the first result , and hence arrive on the blog or the website. Now, if the information present on the website is incomplete or only partially available , the visitor tend to click on an add (which is determined by the keywords used while searching the information on the search engine) considering it an internal link to some extra information.

Hence, based on above theory , if users are clicking more on ads, does prove :

1. Bing is providing results with incomplete information
2. Chitika search advertising provide better results than BING.

This was inevitable isn’t it ? I wonder how many watched the Nokia n97 video review posted in my last post. Its been nearly two weeks playing with Nokia N97 and I knew I would be able to provide a review which would be able to help you deciding what to expect from this device. However, I might end up covering all positives, so make sure you ask your doubts or your questions in the comments sections. So without much more frills, here goes a short review of this device.

The Nokia N97 Review

Its a big brother of Nokia 5800, and those who follow this blog, must be knowing how much I crib about Nokia 5800. If you are a power user, text a lot , and  a proud owner of a full touchscreen phone (without buttons attached), it becomes so difficult to adjust the lack of a physical keyboard after some time. But again , at the same time , you may not want to keep on pressing so many buttons to navigate to a certain menu item, when its available on just a distance of  touch. Here is where Nokia N97 comes into picture. The power of a Touchscreen with a Full QWERTY keypad.

Price

Price is something which many people are concerned of. Everyone would agree with me that Nokia 5800 is most feature rich phone in the particular price segment. Nokia 5800 started with US$ 400 and Nokia N97 is around 699US$ or US$600( if you buy it at Amazon ). So lets see, what all you are getting in this 200 to 300 US$ price gap.

1. 3.5 Inch full touch screen compared to 3.2 Inch Touchscreen
2. Increased speed  of processor from 369Mhz to 434Mhz.
3. a Full QWERTY keypad with a D pad, with slide out Tilt Design
4. FM transmitter
5. LIVE homescreen

7. 32GB internal Memory, expandable upto 64 GB ( with 32GB microSD card )

So judge yourself whether are you getting worth for your money or not ? When you bought Nokia 5800, and proudly agreed that its worth, why not Nokia N97. I feel its much worthy the upgrade. But again, its upto you and your budget whether you would like to go for the upgrade or not.

Overall Hardware design

With the highly complicated slide out tilt design, many eyebrows were raised , whether Nokia would be able to do it right? Many said No, but again with the hardware reviews you must have read regarding Nokia N97, all rumors are proved totally wrong. The slide out design is rock solid and believe me, its just so convenient for using a phone. The more you use it, the more you get used to it and can not prevent yourself from praising it. Why not refresh yourself with Making of Nokia N97 video.

Its much better to have one proper viewing angle, rather than having many improper ones. The phone is just so comfortable to use, with your daily work, that it just become a part of your daily routine. And, having said that, while I am writing this review, two music albums are getting downloaded on my Nokia N97, and I can see the progress with just one touch. I don’t have to lift the phone, to see what’s happening. This is what a convenient viewing angle can do in your mobile phone experience.

Regarding the keyboard, there are lots of concern about the right side placement of the spacebar. Right side placement of the spacebar is in reality no problem, but once you get used to it. It might frustrate you a lot initially as everytime to insert a space, your thumb will automatically move towards the center, later realizing that the spacebar is on the right. I myself got frustrated, but again it was just a matter of time I got used to, and now I dont have any problem with it. It just how fast you get used to it.

Overall keypad is good, but the main negative point lie with the keys. I have no problem with the dedicated numeric keys absent on the keypad. I am absolutely fine with the keypad. The only concern with the keys is that, they dont make you feel as if you are pressing buttons. They are pretty flat, and at times, you wont realize that you have pressed the button, which inturn lead to many spelling mistakes. And at certain time, you might feel that you have pressed the button, but the letter does not appear. But again , this is also a temporary problem which you will get used to so easily once you start using the phone.

Another noticing factor, if you notice the hinge and slide out mechanism take a lot of space in the keypad, which must have resulted in space for  only 3 rows of keys. Now, I think its individual choice to have a highly complicated and better slide out mechanism with 3 rows of keys, or, a normal slide mechanism with 5 rows of keys. As for me , I will prefer to go with the former.

Touch sensitive Call and End Call button brought a sigh of relief for me. I know how much I hated those hard to press buttons on Nokia 5800, and I feel that Nokia heard me. However, one thing which I think Nokia should have given a thought on placement of charging cum data cable slot. As for my preference, it should have been placed between camera button and the volume rocker. I becomes inconvenient to use the phone while its connected or its charging. Its almost the same concept that of a laptop where the charging or the data slot is always either on the side or at the back.

The 3.5inch touchscreen is very bright , responsive and is amazingly legible under direct sunlight. I think its one of the best even when compared to Nokia 5800. The phone is also highly comfortable for single handed usage , as even while holding, whole screen is completely accessible via your thumb.

Over all software design

I found the software much stable compared to Nokia 5800. Even though screen rotation is still not the way I want it to be, but overall you can see a huge change in software. Again , I get a feeling that Nokia nearly answered all my problems with Nokia 5800. The major change in software part are as follows :

1. A proper album management software : Now viewing pictures and video comes with various options. Album viewing option is available month wise , albums or tags.
2. Nokia finally replaced the Edit button with Mark Multiple in photo gallery, which make it so much in managing your pictures and videos. Now marking multiple items is just a breeze.
3. You can use shift key and touch combination to mark multiple items.
4. Full screen browsing with Kinetic scrolling is so pleasant. Bigger screen means, more visible area. Combination of QWERTY keypad means, you can select the link as you type, as per previous viewed pages. Download manager has improved a lot . You can download multiple files at a time and also, if you are downloading a music file, it starts playing even if its partially downloaded. Great step forward Nokia.
5. With the use of QWERTY keypad, searching music tracks has become so easy.
6. Refreshing phone book design, now you can add favorite contacts which always display at the top of the list. Marking multiple and searching contacts has become much easier with QWERTY keypad.
7. Video manager now turned into Video and TV
8. Finger slide for lifting the call when the keypad is locked.
9. Inclusion of timed profiles.
10. Bigger screen means bigger buttons, texting in Alphanumeric mode is now all the more pleasing with huge buttons.
11. Inclusion of predictive text while using the QWERTY keypad is a huge plus. This makes typing so easy and so much fast and quite pleasing too.

and many more improvements here and there.

And Why I bought a Nokia N97 ?

With boasting so much about Nokia N97, it does make me feel that I should make my readers aware on why I decided to buy the Nokia N97. It all started with planning, so first I got rid of my Nokia 5800,and sent it my sister couple of months before Nokia N97 was about to be officially released in UAE. However, to come to the decision was not that easy. For me the major points for buying a Nokia N97 are as follows :

• A full QWERTY keypad with Touchscreen :  Believe me or not, its just a deadly combination. You have all the goodness of a touchscreen + a QWERTY. They both compliment each other, and as per my experience, with either one of them, you are missing a lot in your mobile experience.
• Nokia MAPS  : Another reason, I dont have a Data plan, so I cant afford to keep downloading MBs and MBs of maps data everytime when I am on a move. Nokia MAPS comes handy, you can download the map via your PC onto your mobile, and save a lot of your time while on a move.
• Multitasking : Something which I cant live without. Consider my Nokia phone, I have my Google Talk running in the background, my browser is downloading 7 to 8 files simultaneously, I am listening to music and at the same time texting my friend. To add more, I have one touch access to all my applications running in the background.
• FM transmitter : I want everything to be plug and play. I hate wires and want everything around me to be wireless. I hate burning CDs , and want one place access for all my music files. People know how much time do you waste in morning and evening traffic. How good it is , to just listen to a podcast or a song or an audiobook directly on your car stereo via your phone. No wires , and no duplication of data and music. Just play it on your phone and one touch access transfer it to your car stereo.
• Wide range of Applications for my phone : I love to install different types of applications for my mobile. I keep searching stuffs on OVI store and keep trying and downloading the application either just for timepass or for the productivity.
• A LIVE homescreen : A homescreen where everything is accessible with just one touch. I should get my news updates , my friends updates and plus my favourite applications accessible to me with just one touch.
• YOUTUBE : I am a youtube addict and I am proud to say that. I needed a phone whose browser can support youtube videos and should be a pleasure to watch on.
• A BIG SCREEN with Good resolution  and Ease of viewing : It just compliment the above point mentioned. Viewing pleasure can only come when the screen is big enough with good resolution. Also, it should be available at a very comfortable viewing angle without trouble your palm.
• A good Camera with Great Video Recording Capability : Nokia N97 video recording capabilities are not hidden with anyone. Widescreen Video capture just make it awesome to watch recorded videos, and are also a pleasure to share with friends. • An ALL IN ONE NOKIA PHONE : This is where it all ends. Being a Nokia fan, it gets inevitable for me to not to buy a Nokia phone. So since N97 was from Nokia , it made so much sense for me to go for it .

Conclusion

Nokia N97 for me is a complete phone. I have little complains regarding the processor speed , and the stereo speakers which are not as good as Nokia 5800, but having said that, I am so much impressed with this Nokia phone.
