    January month will remind me of bad hosting stuff. I think I am in a need to move again. Here is comparative study between bluehost vs Dreamhost as per my experience :

    Before I begin , have a look at the screen shots below (january month Statistics), which will give you a brief idea of what the review is gonna be about.

    pingdom statistics

    pingdom statistics

    So, what do you feel ??

    Yeah so the screenshots above must have given you an idea , that this is not gonna be about praising bluehost ( title must have also gave you the same idea. Isnt it ?? ). The only good thing was that, the response time skyscrapers came down drastically after moving to bluehost after January 18th.

    Problems with bluehost

    1. No server status page : When I was with Dreamhost, the moment my site used to go down, first thing I will do is to go to dreamhost status page, which will give me an idea that its a general problem or, only problem related to my webserver.
    2. Waste your time with Highly overrated 24X7 Chat : May I ask you what you will look for when you are given an option for live chat support. For those who think they it will be the same like chatting as you chat in you IMs, need to give a second thought. It will take nearly 5 to 10 minutes before the support guy come online. Even when he is chatting with you, it will take nearly 1 to 2 minute for him to reply and I seriously doubt they are too technically sound. A normal chat which should not take more than 10 minutes will get elongated to nearly 30 minutes, and your problem unresolved.

      Dreamhost on the other hand had great email support and it never more than 20 minutes for them to reply to my mail. Here i have to keep waiting for the guy to come online. You may ask, why wait, raise a ticket, then here is the answer, they dont have a “Website Unavailable” category while opening a ticket at help center. Check out yourself (Quite possible they might add it now).

    3. Weird CPU exceeded error : Their hosting suffer with weird CPU limit exceeding errors which will left your site down for nearly 5 to 10 minutes. Check out here to know more. I never had such issue with dreamhost.
    4. Unlimited domain hosting ( on your server ) : You must have read the highly publicized feature as unlimited domain hosting. How it can affect you?? When I registered with bluehost, there were around 79 sites hosted along with me and after 3 days when my site went down, I checked again and the count increased to 200+ . First time when my site went down for nearly 1 hour, tech support told me that, some other site hosted on my server ,executed some script which made the server go down. He just gave the reply that they are currently working on it. What the heck, still my site is goin down nearly 5 to 10 minutes per day.

    So what Bluehost can actually offer ??

    …………… A good response time , but my question is will you compromise that on uptime ???

    Only people from US need traffic ??

    The most lucrative offer, $50 free for yahoo and $50 free for google adwords. This was one factor which drove me towards bluehost. I wish I had known earlier that the offer is only for US guys. :mad:

    Pingdom report

    I decided to make my webserver status public. You can check the pingdom stats for the month of january’2008 here. Arnt the stats pathetic ??

    Suggest me a Host

    Bluehost has money return policy for 30 days. I think, I will try out for one more week and if things didnt change, I might move again. Please help me by suggesting a good host.

    How to decide when you select a host

    If you have selected a webhost, and are planning to move. Here is an article by arpit which can help you in decide on a good host. This time I will surely follow these steps before moving.

    Tell me if this is possible

    I was thinking to dry run a hosting server before actually moving my website. I was thinking of the possibility of the option below, and need your suggestion to know whether its possible ???

    Buy a .info domain which cost around 1 to 2 $ per year. You use this domain to host site temporary on the host. Create a replica on this host as your curent website. Use a 301 redirect from your current domain to this .info domain. This way you can test this server without actually affecting your move. This could be a test option which could last for 1 to 4 days.

    Disclaimer : The opinion mentioned here are based on my personal experience, which may differ user to user

    Update: This have settled ,and please check the my pingdom report.

    @Kanak
    Thanks again for your detail information. Now that when I tested my site with the tool suggested in the article, My site is hosting along with 950+ other sites in the same ip. And now I use Yahoo Web Hosting. When I tested my other site hosted with IXwebhosting, it was only one and thats mine. They provide us Virtual Private Server and give me a dedicated ip. But their uptime and DB server uptime sucks.

    Now that, I am ready for the test, as I am also insearch of a good hosting partner. So, anything you would want me to test, I can help you in that. :)

    @Kanak From my personal experience Dreamhost is a better option. Some of my friends use bluehost and they often complain about ‘CPU exceed errror’ even though their sites are not that huge in terms of daily hits.

    May be they show this message to hide their other limit features.

    After reading your analysis, dreamhost is better for sure - it may not be best though ;)

    Anyone with experience of using - hostgator and the planet ?

    Well Kanak,
    Sorry to hear about this, but few things I wanted to make clear in the points mentioned.
    The chat is not overrated, whenever I had issues with server, they rectified it in 10 mins and its easy to get a person to chat. (this is my experience).
    CPU exceeded errors can be removed by optimizing the blog design, Aseem has written a great article on how to optmize site on John TP blog.
    To me, dreamhost may not show CPU exceeded errors as they have different reporting system.
    Its up to you to decide whether to move or not.
    But to me Bluehost has never given any problems so far, 3 months straight 100% uptime. :-)

    You can’t expect 100% uptime from any shared host. Bluehost gave me trouble last month but its been doing good this month after I complained. It goes down for 2-3 mins but not more unlike dream host which goes down for hours and is so slow.

    If you want 99% uptime then you should go for dedicated hosting. I haven’t gone for it yet in the future I hope to do that.

    @Nirmal just to let you know your site has gone down a number of times in the last 3 months I am monitoring your site too in my pingdom account.

    @smackall :
    Thanks a lot for your support. I am still not sure to move.. Actually moving the host is something which starts giving me tension from the word “go” . :(

    @davinder
    I am seriously wondering what these CPU exceeded errors has to do with. Its just that , more plugins you use, more will the use of php. I have no clue about the other hosts you mentioned. I am on a lookout.

    Yeah your experience was good, but I wish it was the same in my case. You should look at the pingdom report which i shared . Its just going above the head.. The support doesnt seem to technically enhanced..They take a lot of time in answering stuffs. Well , actually to tell you , it happened with your site first. Once when my site was down, and just to check whether other bluehost site were working , I went to yours and arpit’s site. And guess what, your site gave me that CPU exceeded error and that was the time when i came to know about these errors.
    CPU errors are occuring coz of the excessive use of plugins, that I dont think must be an issue for a site to go down, isnt it ?? Anyways, i will try to contact them and hope they are able to rectify the thing which went wrong.

    @arpit , sounds great that your problem got rectified after you contacted them, I will also try that. Yeah, i know you are monitoring lots of site as I can see 3 sites in my pingdom account itself ;)

    As arpit said you cant expect 100% uptime with any shared hosting. Every host has problems and everyone lies about uptimes and others.

    @ram , oh … I think i should contact bluehost and ask them to look into the matter, anyways I really find moving very troublesome :(

    @Arpit,
    I never said that my site was 100% up in the last 3 months, I said that I had uptime of 100% in 3months when I took the bluehost. If you want I’ll share those reports. :-)

    @Kanak,
    My site also has CPU exceeded errors, I had removed it before, but after my new design, I couldnt get it optimized. One way to reduce is to remove excessive php calls, you can manually code all the calls. These CPU exceeded errors will be cleared in 2-3 min and its always better than hours of downtime from dreamhost. :-)

    yeah , I am also giving it a second thought. Its a great trouble moving host and I think the problem wont be solved by just moving, may be i will try to contact bluehost. They might reduce the downtime atleast.

    2008-02-06 12:23:56
    how do you collect the uptime statistics?

    2008-02-06 12:25:49
    Hey guess it is time for us to move to server of our own…Shall we not start it on our own? How many are ready to join me…guess, Keith is already experienced in this…

    But smackall got a point. what about bandwidth and how to keep it safe from downtime

    Sorry to hear your issues. I also considered Bluehost when I moved, but they are good for low traffic sites only.

    What kind of traffic you get? If you get moderate traffic, then go for VPS/mt or shared hosting will do. Shankar’s blog is hosted on Rs 1/MB host and survived a Digg effect. But thats because there’s not much for sites hosted.

    @ashwin
    I have heard about mt also , its again not that good. Ram conveyed me that. I am planning to stick to bluehost as of now coz of the movement issues, if blog happens to grow, then might move to dedicated. The problem with bluehost is the CPU errors coz of php calls. Now if you are using lots of plugins, then your site will go down 5 to 10 minutes everyday.

    Hey 1 rupee/ mb seems pretty costly … isnt it ??

    Hi Kanak,

    Nice to see that our service is working out for you, too bad about the uptime though.

    Bluehost has posted in their blog that they have fixed the CPU quota issue, see http://mattheaton.com/?p=119.

    Was Google down for a while before 20 minutes?

    We were not able to access google alone for 15 minutes. It was up - down - up - down for some time. I guess it would be google’s fault. :) Even Google has some downtime… :)

    @smackall,
    as arpit said , we can never expect a 100% uptime on a shared server. If you need nearly 99.99% , you can go for dedicated option. But as said, it will be costly :D

    Google and down ??? I dont think so, it could be disruption of internet services due to those under sea cable cuts :)

    After much surfing, here’s my top 10 shared web hosting. (not in particular order)

    hostmonster
    bluehost
    lunarpages
    hostgator
    ixwebhosting
    startlogic
    dreamhost
    globat
    1and1.com
    anHosting

    I know you have a different list than those listed above.

    One of them caught my attention.
    But doubtful… i did more surfing(read more forums comments & more reviews, etc.).

    I found out that all of them have this in common…
    the CPU LIMIT.
    Yes, they offer lots of space & bandwidth.
    But here’s the catch: you use too much cpu… they suspend your account.
    So as you can see, there’s no way your going near the bandwidth you paid for. What a bunch of liars!

    That’s my research, you should do your own.
    Help me find a better host.

    Tell me:

    why you hate about your past web hosting?
    who is your web hosting now?
    how is your new web hosting is better than your previous one?

    your website url? (so i can see how busy your site is.)

    its so true, but later seems like bluehost has taken off the CPU errors. Shared hosting is good enough unless you earn enough from blogging to move to a dedicated host. :) . You can check out my pingdom report at the link under pingdom report in this post.
